Pumpkin Carving

Once again this year, we took on the task of carving pumpkins. I am beginning to think the kids do it just so I will bake the pumpkin seeds. Anyway, Jared had brought one small pumpkin home from a field trip and we had purchased two bigger pumpkins so there was plenty of work to be done.

First, we cleaned all the seeds and goop out of the pumpkins.

Then, I had the kids design a face for the smallest pumpkin. The design for the bigger pumpkins came from a book we had. Andrew enjoys a challenge.

Y-M-C-A … just go to the Y-M-C-A. *

And yes you do have to say it in that sing song voice because that is how Beka and Jared say it all the time.

Andrew signed the family up for a membership to the YMCA recently. Sunday was the first time we used the membership. The best thing about this Y is that they have an indoor pool. The kids are in love. On Sunday, we went and played in the pool for an hour. The water was nice and warm. They actually have two pools. The one we stayed in is basically the kiddie pool although the Y calls it the "fitness pool". It was wonderful! Beka is a little fish and swam around the whole time and was nicely exhausted. Jared splashed, played, and swam a little, and he was exhausted too. We are going to try to make it a weekly family playdate. At least, we will all get a little exercise this winter.

Zip-Line

Jared was bored the other day. He was playing with his actions figures, but they just weren’t fun enough by themselves. So, Jared got the brilliant idea to make a zip-line on the staircase. I had to keep him for covering the whole stairs in yarn. He had so much fun watching the figures fly down the stairs.

Reading Girl

I just love this picture of Beka outside reading her book. She is really getting into reading and loves to take a book with her most places. The problem now keeping her in books that she can read and that she is interested in. She can’t wait for the next Fancy Nancy book to come out in December.

Swordfights and Freezi Pops

I talked about the swords I bought Jared in an earlier post. Here you can see him in action. The other picture is Jared enjoy his freezi pop while swinging. Jared loves to be outside no matter what he is doing.

Silly Hats

The kids school is having a Spirit Week. The first day of Spirit Week was silly hats. The kids and I spent about an hour on Sunday making our silly hats. Beka and Jared loved doing this. They both had great ideas. The hats turned out silly and both kids were proud of their creations.

Playdoh and Clay

Beka loves to create pieces of art out of clay. She has gotten really good at making dogs and mice. Jared enjoys play doh more. I think it is easier for him to form than the clay. Andrew even had fun playing with the clay.

Jared’s Fun!

Jared has been having lots of fun in the morning before he has to go to afternoon kindergarten. We work on reading and some math most mornings, but he still has a lot of free time. Jared has an amazing imagination. Today, I came down the stairs and saw this.

The pteradon had been caught in the net midflight. I have no clue why it was caught or who caught it, but Jared seemed to think it was the coolest thing ever. He loved to see it hanging there.

I bought those foam swords for the kids and Daddy to beat on each other with. Jared enjoys them the most. He loves to practice sword fighting. The best part is when he loses a leg or any other body part in the fight, it magically regrows about 30 seconds later. "It regrowed!"

Renaissance Fair

Last Sunday, we took the kids to a Renaissance Fair here. I think they had the best time on the tractor ride to and from the fair, but we did manage to fit in a few other fun things.

When you first walked into the fair, a statue was handing out blessings. She handed you her story and sprinkled you with blessings (glitter). One section of the fair was set up as a kids carnival area. Beka had her face painted.

Jared had a sword fight which I didn’t get any pictures of. And both children went on a pony ride.

Of course, I had to lock both kids up in the stockade because what parent doesn’t dream of being able to do that just once.

We saw shows about predatory birds, pirates, cloggers, jugglers, and many other wonderful things. It was a really enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

Pottery

Beka loves to create things as I have mentioned several times. The birthday party she went to the weekend was right up her alley because of that. The party was held at a pottery place. The pottery is already done for you. But you go in pick the piece you want, paint it, and then they fire it. You can either pick it up later or they can mail it to you. Beka had a blast painting the horse she had chosen. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. It was a great birthday party because the girls laughed and talked but were kept busy which kept them out of trouble. And everyone gets a special memory of the day.
