Playing

"You are worried about seeing him spend his early years in doing nothing. What! Is it nothing to be happy? Nothing to skip, play, and run around all day long? Never in his life will he be so busy again." ~Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emile, 1762

I found this quote earlier today and I am going to admit that I keep feeling we are just wasting away the summer with play time. We play at numerous playgrounds, we go swimming, and we explore outdoors, but it still feels like we are doing nothing. Some days it just feels like a waste especially on the days we are home all day and I keep hearing "I’m bored". But I try to remind myself that even though we are playing, Beka and Jared are only little once. And when school starts, play time will be limited. We can only enjoy this summer right now. So I need to remember that being happy, impulsive, and curious is something.

  2. I struggle with the same thing, especially when we are surrounded by folks whose kids are in lots of sports and other lessons. I cherish these long, slow days when the kids “just play” all day long. They will never again have so much free time and time just to “be” as they do now when they are little. I want to protect and preserve that for them as long as I can. Plenty time later for their days to be dictated by schedules and responsibilities. I pray this gift of time we are now giving them helps them be calm, well-balanced adults. :O)
